Trivial nights are currently all the rage and gaining in popularity. Pubs, bookshops and cafes are hosting these lively interactive events and they are often sold out. While heading to a venue may not be practical for your residents, you can easily bring the fun of trivia to them by hosting the event at your aged care home.

Brain-based activities such as trivia can exercise residents’ memory and laughing muscles while sparking conversation, helping them connect with each other and share past experiences, all while having fun as a group.

When to host a trivia event

There is no wrong time to put on a Trivia Event. It can be included as part of any meal occasion from main meals to morning or afternoon tea, or as an after-meal activity.

Regardless of when you hold the event, easy-to-eat, snack-style food and drinks can help keep everyone energised.

How to prepare and run the trivia event

A little preparation goes a long way towards a successful Trivia Event.

You will need

  • A quiz master to ask the questions
  • A scorer who marks the answers and determines the winning team
  • At least three 3 teams of 4 to 5 people
  • Each team will need a witty or clever team name
  • Scribes to help with writing the answers for each team.here is no wrong time to put on a Trivia Event. It can be included as part of any meal occasion from main meals to morning or afternoon tea, or as an after-meal activity.

Set each team up at a table with pen and paper to write their answers on.

The format

The simplest format for trivia is to have either three or five sets of questions on a variety of topics. So that the event doesn’t run for too long, between five and seven questions for each topic is ideal.

Fun topic ideas for your trivia questions:

  • Australian history
  •  Music from the 1970s
  • International food
  • Sport
  • Classic lines from movies
  • All about animals
  • Local colour; questions about things happening at your home.

The quiz master reads out a question, and each team confers and agrees on their answer.

After all teams answer all questions for a topic, the answer sheets are handed to the scorer who marks them as the quiz master calls out the answers. Alternatively, each team swaps answer sheets and marks each other’s.

The quiz master then moves onto the next set of questions for the next topic.

At the end of all the rounds, the scorer checks the answer sheets, and the winning team is announced.

You can also award fun prizes for

  • The best team name
  • The most incorrect answer
  • The most inventive/funny answer
  • The loudest team.
